Altar Bouquet - Embossed And Polychrome Sheet Metal - Italy, 18th–19th Centuries
Altar bouquet - Repoussé and polychrome sheet metal - Italy, late 18th to early 19th century
A remarkable altar bouquet made of sheet metal that has been cut, embossed, and then polychromed, designed to be placed on an altar table or a console table. The cup at the back is designed to hold a candle, creating a play of light through the openwork.
The ensemble features a Rocaille-style vase in a beautiful turquoise hue from which springs a lush floral arrangement, consisting of foliage and a wide variety of stylized flowers that have retained their splendid original polychromy. The color palette—combining deep greens, reds, ochres, and an intense turquoise blue on the vase—has retained all its vibrancy and splendor, while displaying a very pleasing antique patina that reveals the bare sheet metal beneath the polychrome.
The back of the piece reveals a central metal reinforcement bar as well as the original support system. A 200g weight was placed in the cup for the photos; although the object stands upright without it, a slight counterweight helps increase its stability.
A beautiful devotional piece with extraordinary decorative presence.
In very good condition, with a charming antique patina consistent with the object’s age.
