Yatate (矢立) – Bronze, Lotus Flowers – Japan, Late Edo Period (1603–1868)
Yatate (矢立) – Writing set – Bronze with lotus flower motif – Japan, late Edo period (1603–1868)
A bronze *yatate* (矢立)—a fine, traditional scholar’s implement that reflects the refinement of Japanese calligraphy.
Designed as a portable writing kit, its pipe-like form combines an ink reservoir—containing cotton wadding soaked in India ink—with a sheath for a calligraphy brush. The lid of the reservoir on this particular piece features a subtle, raised motif of a blooming lotus flower. Inside, the original textile wadding used to hold the India ink remains intact.
The bronze, masterfully cast, is of exceptional quality and bears a beautiful, pleasing patina acquired through use.
The term *yatate* literally means "arrow holder" (*ya*: "arrows"; *tate*: "holder"). This name originates from the practice among *bushi* (samurai) of using their inkstone as a base for their quiver.
Excellent condition; the lid is fully functional.
