A double-bitted axe, known as a Labrys (a term used by analogy based on its shape), crafted by the Bregand toolmaking workshop in Morges (Canton of Vaud, Switzerland). The piece features a forged steel head with a concave profile, providing two cutting edges. The primary advantage of this dual-edge design lies in its versatility for woodworking: one edge, with a more robust profile, is suited for roughing out, while the second—sharpened at a finer angle—allows for precise finishing work, all without the need to switch tools. The blade bears two original, hot-stamped maker’s marks: that of the Swiss toolmaker, "BREGAND / A MORGES," and, in all likelihood, that of the craftsman who commissioned the piece, "F. MERMOUD." The original turned wooden handle is notable for its deep, circular grooves and elegant contours. It is highly intuitive to hold, with the grooves providing an excellent, secure grip. While the tool requires significant physical strength to wield—possessing a substantial, noticeable weight—it remains remarkably well-balanced in the hand.
The head is firmly secured by a forged, square-section tang that passes through the handle and is riveted at the top, ensuring the structural rigidity of this antique implement.

Exceptional condition. The steel displays a beautiful "gunmetal" patina, with no oxidation or deformation. The handle bears an amber-toned, lustrous patina, developed through decades of use. There is no play or looseness in the assembly.
