Ottoman Empire - Pepper Mill - Chased Copper With Brass Bands - Second Half Of The 19th Century
Ottoman Metalwork – Two-part pepper mill – Chased copper body, brass bands, wrought-iron handle with a turned-wood knob – Late Ottoman period (c. 1860–1900)
This cylindrical pepper mill consists of two distinct sections that can be separated to reveal the lower receptacle. Two thick brass bands form the joint and visually segment the object. The upper dome is topped with a wrought-iron handle, finished with a turned-wood grip. The entire piece rests on an ogee-molded base. A fine example of the craftsmanship of Ottoman-era metalworkers, the mill features a rich, intricate design of interlaced arabesques across its body, set against a stippled, matte background.
The piece features its original, traditional, hand-assembled construction and displays a pleasing patina on the copper, acquired through use.
The object is presented and sold in its current condition. The handle still rotates freely on its axis. The lid of the upper reservoir—used for adding peppercorns—is currently stuck due to the natural oxidation of the copper. The lower receptacle is in very good condition. There are signs of oxidation, wear, and slight deformations, all consistent with the piece’s original purpose and age.
