Mahout’s goad, also known as an ankus, made of wrought iron with a decorative pattern of dots and grooves, India, late 19th century. Beautiful antique patina, in perfect condition.
Historically, the ankus has been an indispensable tool for the mahout. This hook is applied with precision to sensitive areas of the elephant, allowing the mahout to indicate the direction to follow or the command to execute. These tools are used less and less today and are subject to numerous controversies and restrictions in certain parts of Southeast Asia.
