A rare, and possibly unique, French eighteenth-century double-ended combination patch box and snuff box/bonbonniere, of oval cylindrical form, the body and interior of silver, the inside of the lid of the patch box with a mirror, the exterior embellished with yellow gold tulips and pink gold pimpernels, vines, and columns, separated by brown and cream enamel, and black textured lacquer bands (giving a leather-like texture). The wide variety of materials used suggests either a special commission or an exhibition piece.
Measurements: 4.4cm (1.73in) high, 3.9cm (1.5in) wide, 3.2cm (1.3in) deep.
Marks: Crowned “F” warranty mark. Flowerhead (half-struck) charge mark. maker’s mark JLD. Suggesting a date of circa 1770?
Condition. When we received this box, the textured black lacquerwork was heavily deteriorated. Thankfully, an experienced antique lacquer conservator was able to restore it to near-original condition. The brown and cream enamel bands have losses (please see images). We chose not to have these restored as the original colour of the enamel has most likely faded and any retouching would, therefore, be cosmetic only. The silvering of the mirror of the patch box is slightly tarnished.
