A Meissen porcelain figure group, c.1755. We have seen this group previously as one of the elements of a Bacchic centrepiece modelled by Johann Joachim Kändler. A scatily clad lady, possibly Ariadne, reclines next to a putto wearing a belt of vines with bunches of grapes, astride a goat. To the left of the lady is a basket of fruit. All on an elaborate rocaille base with gilt highlights.
Measurements:
Height: 18.5 cm (7.3 in)
Width: 20 cm (7.9 in)
Depth: 8.5 cm (3.3 in)
Maker’s marks: Underglaze blue crossed swords
Condition: In good original condition except for: Minor losses - The index finger of the lady’s left hand to the second knuckle, and the little finger of the putto’s left hand to the third knuckle, possibly to the ends of a couple of the leaves overhanging the fruit basket. Restoration - Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals some good restoration to the front of the lady’s right foot and to her right arm.
