Derby Biscuit Porcelain Figure Of A Gardener, 18th Century
Artist: Derby
An eighteenth-century, circa 1771, Derby biscuit porcelain figure of a young gardener, emblematic of Earth, from No.3, The Four Elements. 16.5 cm (6.5 in) high.
Notes: This figure is based on a Tournai (Belgium) model by Pierre Stephan, who worked for William Duesbury at Derby from 1770 to 1773, producing models based on his earlier work.
Condition: To the naked eye, this figure appears to be in near-perfect condition, with no easily identifiable losses, damage, or apparent restoration. However, inspection under ultraviolet light reveals scattered flaring throughout, suggesting quite extensive restoration of a very high quality.
