19th Century French Carved Walnut Panel

A magnificent French walnut panel, 19th century or earlier, finely carved in very high relief with mythological creatures, a gorgon’s face, crayfish tails, elaborate scrolls, swags, and a blank cartouche against a finely hammered background. The foliage swags and tails of the chimeras at either side at the top of the panel are raised (carved behind) and stand proud of the background.

The time it would have taken to carve this panel and the precision with which it was carved suggest that it may have been an exhibition or demonstration piece.

Measurements:
Height: 37.3cm (14.6in)
Width: 49.5cm (19.5in)
Depth: 6.5cm

Condition: Very good. The panel appears to be made from two, horizontally joined, walnut planks, the upper plank is approximately twice the width of the lower. In places at the left and right edges of the panel, the joins are visible. There is a tiny loss of the corner of the end of the tail of the chimera at top left (see image), and a little rubbing to high points.
