Pair Of Enamel Portrait Miniatures, Ca.1850

A fine pair of mid-19th century enamel portrait miniatures, probably British, believed to be wife and husband. Each with an elaborate gilt metal mount, set against a velvet backing in a glazed, box frame. Apparently unsigned (unexamined out of frame).

Measurements:
Her:
Height of visible portrait: 8.4 cm (3.3 in)
Width of visible portrait: 6.5 cm (2.6 in)
Height of frame: 20.1 cm (7.9 in)
Width of frame: 17.2 cm (6.8 in)

Him:
Height of visible portrait: 4.8 cm (1.9 in)
Width of visible portrait: 3.8 cm (1.5 in)
Height of frame: 17.5 cm (6.9 in)
Width of frame: 15.4 cm (6.1 in)

Condition: Excellent. The miniatures are in fine, original condition. The sides of the wood frame surrounds are scuffed, mainly around their fixing screws. The velvet backs are a little worn.

Notes: Either or both may be signed on the reverse (counter-enamel), as is often the case. We explored opening the frame, as it is clear this has been done in the past. However, removing the screws (which need to be pulled out, as their threads do not engage) from the wood surround does not provide immediate access to the miniature, as the glass appears to be fixed to the backing, making a sealed unit. That was as far as we were prepared to go without employing a framer or, perhaps, a jeweller.

Shipping: Included to the UK, EU, Canada, Australia, Asia, USA, and most other destinations. Please note that any import charges/sales taxes are the buyer's responsibility.
