19th-century French Earthenware Model Of A Snake, Probably Saint-honoré-les-bains, Palissy

A rare 19th-century glazed earthenware model of a snake, probably Saint-Honoré-les-Bains, in the style of Bernard Palissy, with finely moulded scales and brown markings, ca. 1870-1880.

Height: 3.5 cm (1.4 in)

Condition: In perfect, original condition, with no restoration.

Notes: Snakes often featured on Palissy ware dishes and plates of the nineteenth century, typically placed in the center of compositions. The few surviving examples of separate, glazed snakes suggest that some factories may have made them as collectible figures. (Source: Met Museum, New York)
