French Silver Scent Bottle, Early 18th Century
An early 18th-century silver scent bottle, probably French circa 1720, of flattened, teardrop form, with a ribbed collar and top. The knopped top unscrews, revealing a securely fitting stopper that appears to be made of wood. One side of the bottle is engraved with a strapwork monogram (“VA” or “AV”?). 10.7 cm (4.2 in) high.
Maker’s marks: There is a row of tiny zigzag tool marks, approximately 1 cm long, along one of the lower-left edges and another under the base (see image). We do not know what these signify.
Condition: Good. Small marks and knocks appropriate to age.
