Large 18th-century Rouen Documentary Faience Figural Jug, 1782
A large Rouen faïence figural character jug of a comedic figure sat on a barrel, holding a wineskin in his left hand and a cup in his right.
40cm (15.75in) high.
Marks: Dated 1782 on the base and in yellow glaze on the front of the barrel, where there is also ‘MxZ’ in blue. Inscribed to the back of the barrel 'J en B te Dumont’. Inscribed to the base ‘Fait a rouen/Par L****cornu/En 1792’.
Condition: Old rivet repair to his neck. Old replacement metal handle. Losses to the cup. Crack (possibly firing) to his left foot. Small glaze loss and crazing to his stomach. Various glaze runs and marks.
Provenance: By descent from the collection of Dr Joseph Zellis (1922-2004), Philadelphia. Purchased from antiques dealer Roslyn Rosier, New York, 25th April 1957.
