Eagle-shaped Church Lectern — Spain, Baroque Period, 18th Century Carved And Polychrome Wood

Exceptional eagle-shaped church lectern — Spain, Baroque period, 18th century
Carved wood, original polychrome paint, and gilded highlights — H. 200 cm

A remarkable piece of liturgical furniture from the Iberian Baroque period, this eagle-shaped lectern with outstretched wings brilliantly illustrates the tradition of eagle-shaped lecterns used in major Spanish churches and cathedrals of the 18th century.

The eagle—the evangelical symbol of Saint John—rests here on a sphere set atop an imposing tripod base; the entire piece features high-quality carved decoration in the Baroque ornamental style: volutes, corbels, and cartouches executed with the virtuosity characteristic of Castilian or Andalusian workshops of the period.

The polychrome decoration, imitating precious marbles accented with gold, is beautifully preserved and attests to the care taken in the execution of this piece, which was intended for a major religious building.

Uniform antique patina, signs of wear, and a few cracks consistent with its age. Minor, routine restorations that do not affect the legibility or overall aesthetic of the work.

Dimensions: H. 200 cm — W. 74 cm — D. 62 cm

A rare piece due to its dimensions and the quality of its preserved polychromy.
