Quite a substantial size for a boxwood sculpture (and a bit larger than it appears in the photos):

Base depth: 7 cm

Depictions of beggars were a recurring theme in the 17th century following the publication of Jacques Callot’s famous series of engravings around 1622. In Germany, the subject remained very popular in the 18th century and was extensively illustrated by Simon Troger and, above all, his followers. Here, the style allows us to date the sculpture to the late 17th century, under the significant influence in Germany at that time of Leonhard Kern. The stocky build, the outstretched arm, the eyes raised to the heavens, the very round face with deep brow ridges, and the strongly marked expression lines around the mouth all reflect the style of the Kern family.
