Allegory Of Hope - Carved Walnut Panel C. 1600
Artist: D'après Maarten De Vos
Allegory of Hope.
Beautiful finely carved walnut panel, after a Flemish engraving made in 1590 by Raphaël I Sadeler on a drawing by Maarten de Vos.
Undoubtedly French work (probably Île-de-France) ca. 1600.
Total dimensions: 39 x 39.5 cm
Sadeler's engraving only survives in a few copies and was probably the subject of a very small print run . It is nevertheless kept in a few museums including the Rijksmuseum or the National Gallery of Canada, see illustration and here:

About the type of finely carved furniture whose panel comes from (it was originally a door), and from the recurring influence of Flemish engravings on their decoration, we will consult the very complete work of Jacques Thirion, Le Mobilier du Moyen-Âge et de la Renaissance en France, 1998.
