Large and magnificent statue of St Jean Baptiste, early 18th century, in finely carved oak.
Back sketched, standing, a lamb at his feet ( known attribute of St John the Baptist ).
He is dressed in a coat whose sides are folded on the front
and carries a shoulder bag at the front.
Some traces of polychromy.
Missing in the left hand, cross or shepherd’s stick.
St John the Baptist was the cousin of Jesus, it was he who baptized Jesus at his request
in the waters of the Jordan.
He is in the biblical tradition the greatest of prophets,
he reveals the coming of Jesus, the Messiah.
The lamb that is represented near St John the Baptist is
the image of Jesus the Lamb of God.
