1769 Matched Gilt Metal And Agate Chatelaine And Etui With Implements
A superb George III, c.1769, matched gilt metal and agate chatelaine and etui with implements, including scissors, bodkin needle, spoon, folding fruit knife, and a bone writing surface with a handwritten note in pencil: “How can they say that nature has nothing made in vain / Hardwicke Sept 19th 1769 a happy afternoon S.T.”,
Measurements: Overall length 7.5in (19cm). Etui 4.5in (11.5cm)
Condition: In excellent condition. The lid of the etui shows a small gap when viewed from the inside (see image), probably where a seam was not fully joined. There are some scratches on the reverse of the chatelaine. The bone writing surface is missing a rivet cover on one side of the hinge.
