Gilded Wooden Frame From The Empire Period With An Illuminated Manuscript Page On Vellum—15th Century (1)
A charming small gilded wooden frame from the First Empire period, dating from the early 19th century, adorned with an elegant antique-style palmette design, a motif characteristic of the neoclassical style that was particularly in vogue during the Empire.
It contains a precious page from a medieval manuscript on vellum, taken from a 15th-century liturgical book. The text, written in elegant Bastard Gothic script in the Flemish tradition, is embellished with five richly decorated initials, three of which are highlighted with gold leaf.
The finesse of the script, the delicacy of the ornamentation, and the quality of the gilding attest to the care taken in the creation of these precious manuscripts, intended to accompany the liturgy. Based on the style of its initials and the characteristics of its calligraphy, this page can be dated to the 15th century.
The combination of this medieval fragment—a testament to the art of illuminated manuscripts—and its Empire-style frame gives it a very special charm. A beautiful collector’s item, bridging two eras and two artistic traditions.
Condition: Frame in good presentable condition, with several missing sections visible in the photos. The reverse side of the manuscript is not visible; the frame must be disassembled.

- Frame: 14.5 x 16.9 cm
