Gothic Bronze Mortar With Beautiful Decoration, Era Of The Catholic Monarchs
Beautiful and heavy bulbous mortar with its original pestle, cast in bronze. Rim is accented by a pronounced moulding, while body is structured by four projecting buttresses.
Between them can be seen several worn heraldic motifs, possibly towers of Castile, and lion of León, symbols frequently found on this type of mortar. Decoration also features six Gothic letters with internal emblems, together with crosses and floral ornaments.
Dated to around 1530, this example displays the characteristics of an early casting, although the actual casting may be somewhat later, as is often the case with Spanish and Franch productions.
Condition: It is evident that this mortar has been used; the body has become slightly misshapen from use.No flaws; it rings clear. Patina and design of this object amaze me.
