Rare Carved Wooden Female Bust – Netherlands, First Half Of The 17th Century
Rare carved wooden female bust – Netherlands, first half of the 17th century (exhibited in Florence in 1969)
A refined and unique female bust, carved in the round from finely worked wood; the work can be attributed to Dutch production from the first half of the 17th century.
This work stands out for its fascinating and enigmatic iconography: the face, with delicate and expressive features, rests on a slender neck encircled by a close-fitting ruff, above a draped gown with a geometric cut, typical of the period. The elongated and polished shape of the skull lends the sculpture a timeless, almost modern elegance, making it an ideal piece for a “Cabinet of Curiosities” or for a collection of ancient Northern European sculptures.
Exceptional provenance: this historic piece was presented and exhibited in 1969 at the 6th International Antiques Fair in Florence (at Palazzo Strozzi), one of Europe’s most prestigious antiquities events.
Condition: The piece is in excellent original condition, enhanced by a superb, warm, and deep period patina. There are natural and slight cracks in the wood due to drying (visible on the back), as well as subtle signs of wear that attest to its authenticity and age, without, however, compromising its structural integrity or aesthetic appeal.
