Polychrome Wooden Sculpture, Saint John The Baptist, 19th Century.
The sculpture largely retains its polychromy, particularly in the robe, which is sky blue with a red lining.
The saint is depicted carrying the lamb mentioned in two passages from the Gospel of John.
Saint John the Baptist symbolically entrusts his destiny to Jesus Christ: "Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world." One day, he meets Jesus of Nazareth, who asks to be baptized. John then proclaims the arrival of the Messiah and presents him as the Lamb of God. The tradition of the Paschal Lamb partly originates from this biblical episode.
A hanging loop is visible, along with two holes, on the back.
It has a beautiful patina.
The piece is in good overall condition.
Dimensions:
H: 84.5 cm
