Pair Of "maures Portiers" Sculptures, France, 19th Century
An elegant pair of full-length figures carved from polychrome wood, constituting a remarkable example of 19th-century French decorative salon sculpture. The sculptures depict two Moors dressed in rich Oriental costumes, with meticulous attention to detail in the fabrics, headdresses, and accessories.
The figures are depicted in dynamic poses: one holds a tall staff topped with a spherical knob, while the other raises a chain adorned with a pendant, lending the composition a ceremonial and solemn character. The contrast between the dark, polished surface and the vibrant polychromy of the clothing enhances the decorative effect and emphasizes the theatricality of the figures. The gold accents on the shoes, belts, and drapery create an impression of opulence in keeping with the tastes of the Historicist era.
Such sculptures served as spectacular elements in the state rooms and vestibules of bourgeois residences. In addition to their representational function, these figures were often used as incense burners or accessory holders, serving as decorative substitutes for servants in interior design. The bases take the form of beveled pedestals imitating marble, embellished with gilded moldings.
