Silver Lobster, Spain, 20th Century
A naturalistic decorative figure depicting a langoustine, crafted by Spanish silversmiths from high-quality silver. The sculpture is cast, then meticulously hand-chiseled and finished to recreate the structure of the crustacean’s carapace, claws, and legs.
The figure stands out for its expressive form and precise anatomical detail. The segmented carapace and tail form a dynamic silhouette, while the long antennae and legs accentuate the impression of movement. A distinctive feature of the piece is its articulated construction: the body consists of interconnected segments, and the claws are mounted on small hinges. The surface of the silver combines matte and polished areas, highlighting the relief of the carapace.
Such silver figures were traditionally used as unique ornaments for a fish or seafood table, continuing the European tradition of naturalistic table decorations.
