Russian Art Nouveau-style Silver Ark. Workshop Of Vasily Ivanovich Andreev. Moscow.
This Russian silver kovche, crafted in Vasily Ivanovich Andreev’s workshop in Moscow between 1899 and 1908, is a remarkable example of early 20th-century Russian decorative arts. Crafted in the traditional form of the old Russian kovche, it is reinterpreted in the refined aesthetic of Art Nouveau. The flowing lines of the body and the asymmetrical silhouette reflect the pursuit of an organic form characteristic of the artistic language of that era.
The vessel features an oval body with delicately shaped walls and an irregular upper rim that lends the piece a subtle sculptural movement. The front and back are adorned with finely executed openwork decoration, which visually lightens the composition while enhancing its decorative character.
The tall, openwork handle is an artistic element in its own right. Its composition combines geometric forms with supple, plant-like lines, characteristic of Russian Art Nouveau. A circular medallion set into the upper part of the handle, combined with elegant, undulating cutouts, creates a graphic silhouette reminiscent of the decorative motifs found in early 20th-century architecture.
The simplicity of the decoration, the quality of the modeling of the forms, and the excellence of the craftsmanship make this kovche a characteristic example of Moscow goldsmithing from the heyday of Russian Art Nouveau.
