Russian Art Nouveau Kovch In Cloisonné Enamel. Fiodor Ruckert, Russia, Moscow, 1908–1917
A museum-quality silver kovch, crafted in the workshop of Fyodor Ivanovich Ruckert, one of the most eminent masters of the Moscow school of cloisonné enamel and the chief enamel artist at the Carl Fabergé house. Inspired by the traditional form of Russian ceremonial tableware, this kovch transcends any utilitarian function to become a refined work of decorative art. The cylindrical body, with its wavy rim, and the heart-shaped cross-handle create a balanced and elegant silhouette.
The entire exterior surface, as well as the top of the handle, is covered with cloisonné enamel of remarkable craftsmanship. The decoration illustrates Ruckert’s characteristic synthesis of geometric and botanical motifs. The deep brown background—the artist’s signature color—highlights intense blue triangles and diamonds, latticework bands, and stylized floral motifs in shades of pink and light blue accented with touches of turquoise.
The composition, structured in rhythmic registers, accentuates the roundness of the form and suggests an inner movement. The front and back are adorned with spirals, diamonds, and triangles, which can be interpreted as symbols of water, the sun, and Nordic ornamentation. Appliqué elements in pure silver—drops, crosses, and latticework—add depth, relief, and play of light, reinforcing the poetic evocation of the Russian North.
The interior is entirely gilded, underscoring the object’s ceremonial character and attesting to its status as high-end artistic silverware.
