Sculpted Group “the Abduction Of The Sabines” Based On A Work By Giovanni Da Bologna (1529–1608), Italy
The sculptural group *The Rape of the Sabine Women* was created based on the famous model by the Florentine master Giovanni da Bologna, a leading figure of late Mannerism and the early Baroque. The composition refers to one of the most dramatic episodes in the legendary history of Rome, linked to the city’s founding and the beginning of the so-called Sabine War.
The multi-figure group is designed according to the principle of the *figura serpentinata*, characteristic of Giambologna’s sculptural style. The viewer’s gaze unfolds in a spiral, from bottom to top: from the defeated figure imploring for mercy to the male protagonist asserting his victory, then toward the ascending female figure whose gesture accentuates the dramatic tension. The contrasts in poses, the opposition of gestures, and the spatial complexity create an impression of continuous movement and inner conflict.
The modeling of the nude bodies references the canons of Antiquity, while the expressiveness of the poses and the dynamics of the composition reflect the aesthetics of Mannerism. The surface treatment visually mimics bronze with a noble patina, characteristic of high-quality decorative and collector’s replicas produced in the 20th century.
