Japanese Bronze Figure Depicting A Samurai Archer. Japan, 19th Century

A beautiful Japanese bronze cabinet figure depicting a samurai archer, made in Japan in the 19th century. The warrior is depicted at the peak of his shot, using a large asymmetrical Japanese bow, or yumi. The dynamic pose conveys the tension of the movement, the inner concentration, and the martial mastery traditionally associated with the samurai warrior class.

The sculptor has carefully rendered the main elements of the warrior’s costume and equipment, including the multi-piece armor, the wide belt, the traditional hairstyle, and the accessories specific to an archer. Particular attention was paid to the modeling of the figure and the treatment of the bronze’s surface, producing rich effects of light and shadow as well as a remarkable sense of movement.

Bronze sculptures of this type were produced during the Meiji period for the international market as accomplished works of Japanese decorative arts. They constituted an important category of export-oriented production and were particularly prized by European collectors.

This figure represents a remarkable example of 19th-century Japanese bronze sculpture, combining the iconography of samurai culture with the technical virtuosity of Japanese metalwork.
