Marble Sculpture “venus At The Bath,” Europe, 19th–early 20th Century

A significant marble sculpture depicting the goddess Venus in a moment of intimate contemplation by a sacred spring. The nude figure is depicted in the classic crouching pose: one arm resting on her bent knee, the other delicately extended to the side, creating a subtle interplay of lines and volumes. The tilt of the head and the gentle twist of the torso accentuate the meditative and poetic character of the composition.

The iconography traces back to the ancient prototype of the “Venus at the Bath,” known from Roman marble copies dating to the 2nd century B.C. The 19th-century sculptor interprets this ancient canon in a refined academic style, paying particular attention to the idealized anatomy, the softness of the modeling, and the finesse of the polished surface. The white marble, enhanced by a light natural patina, reinforces the impression of purity and timeless harmony.

The figure rests on a simple octagonal base adorned with a beaded frieze, emphasizing the work’s neoclassical character. The nearly life-size scale gives the sculpture a museum-quality presence and architectural dignity.
