Gilded Bronze Easter Egg Depicting Scenes From The Passion Of Christ And The Resurrection. Russia

A gilt-bronze Easter egg decorated with Gospel scenes in relief, made in Russia in the late 19th–early 20th century. This object is a refined example of Russian decorative arts from the Historicism period and of the tradition of cabinet pieces associated with Orthodox devotion.

The surface of the egg is decorated with two multi-figure relief scenes illustrating the essential meaning of the Paschal cycle. One side features the scene “The Descent from the Cross,” symbolizing the Passion of Christ, the redemptive sacrifice, and the fulfillment of the Savior’s earthly journey. The opposite side depicts “The Resurrection of Christ,” the central event of the Christian faith and the primary symbol of the Easter celebration.

The refined modeling of the reliefs, the expressiveness of the figures, the meticulous rendering of the folds in the clothing, and the complex spatial composition reflect the influence of the 19th-century academic artistic tradition. The sculptural richness of the form and the solemn decorative character of the object reflect the characteristics of the Neo-Baroque style, characteristic of Russian art during the historicist period.

This object was intended to be given as an Easter gift, to serve as a devotional object for a private collection, or as an element of a private Orthodox interior, combining the function of a commemorative work with the spiritual symbolism of Christ’s Resurrection.
