Hanging Oil Lamp Based On A Design By Sergei Vashkov. P.i. Olovyanishnikov & Sons, Empire Style

An elegant hanging oil lamp based on an original design by Sergei Ivanovich Vashkov, a leading figure in Moscow modernism and a key reformer of ecclesiastical art in the early 20th century. The composition is distinguished by its masterful architecture and a subtle balance between structural precision and decorative richness. A dome-shaped crown topped by a cross surmounts a system of chains supporting a circular ring with a central basin of deep blue glass. The lower section is adorned with suspended chains, green glass beads, and a chi-rho symbol, all referencing early Christian symbolism. The piece as a whole illustrates Vashkov’s characteristic synthesis of Byzantine tradition, the heritage of ancient Russia, and Art Nouveau aesthetics.

Dimensions: Length: 60 cm. Top diameter: 6.5 cm. Lamp diameter: 14 cm. Height of glass insert: 5 cm. Diameter of the glass insert: 8 cm.

Condition: Good overall condition. Minor signs of use and age, consistent with the object’s age. Stable structure; glass elements intact.

Provenance:
Made by P.I. Olovyanishnikov & Sons in 1911. The first example was designed as a display piece intended for Her Imperial Highness Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna.
