Madonna della Ghiara – Carved ivory sculpture, 16th century (with CITES)
Description:A rare and exquisite ivory sculpture depicting the "Madonna della Ghiara."
Period: Late 16th century (16th century).
Dimensions: 15 x 7 cm – Height 13 cm.
Iconography and Critical Notes:
The work draws on the famous Emilian iconography of the Madonna della Ghiara (derived from a drawing by Lelio Orsi from 1569). The Virgin is depicted seated in adoration with her hands clasped before the Infant Jesus, who is also seated independently on a cushion supported by a spindle-shaped element. The entire group rests on a finely carved cloud-shaped base embellished with the heads of winged cherubs.
The quality of the carving is of an exceptional artistic level, evident in the soft and complex drapery of Mary’s robe, the anatomical rendering of the Child, and the expressiveness of the faces.
Condition: Excellent condition consistent with the period, featuring a splendid natural patina on the ivory.
CITES Documentation:
The work is accompanied by a valid and official CITES CE/EU certificate no. IT/CE/2023/MI/00176, which attests to its lawful provenance and antiquity, in full compliance with current regulations governing the ivory trade.
