Carved African Elephant Tusk – Central Africa, Circa 1920–1930 – 33 Cm

An African elephant tusk finely carved in high relief, depicting a procession of openwork elephants heading toward a crocodile with its mouth open.

African work, likely from Central Africa, circa 1920–1930, in the style of carved tusks intended for the colonial market in the first half of the 20th century.

The sculpture is carved from a single tusk, preserving the natural curve of the ivory. The elephants are rendered in the round with openwork detailing that highlights the tusk’s volume, while the tip is carved into a crocodile’s head.

Length: 33 cm
