Carved Ivory Plaque In High Relief – Saint Anne The Educator – Southern Germany, 18th Century
A rare and remarkable carved ivory plaque in very high relief depicting Saint Anne as a teacher, accompanied by the young Virgin Mary.
Saint Anne, seated and clad in a flowing drape, holds an open book from which she instructs the young Mary. The scene is framed at the top by two winged cherubs, lending the composition a particularly rich and lively quality.
The work is distinguished by the depth of the carving, the delicate rendering of the faces and drapery, as well as the strong sculptural presence of the figures, which are almost entirely set apart from the background.
Southern Germany, circle of Georg Fux (1661–1706), late 17th century.
Beautiful antique patina with signs of wear and small cracks consistent with the age and nature of the material.
