Chalice With Gothic 'memento Mori' In Copper And Gilded Copper - Italy - 15th Century
Elegant 15th-century Italian Gothic chalice in copper and gilded copper. The flared bowl, with its sober, harmonious lines, rests on a hexagonal stem adorned with an architectural knot richly decorated with floral and openwork motifs characteristic of late Italian Gothic.
The polylobed foot features refined engraved decoration, including a depiction of Christ on the cross accompanied by a skull at the foot of the cross, the traditional symbol of Golgotha and redemption. Finely incised geometric and vegetal motifs complete the ornamentation of the base.
The whole exudes a beautiful sculptural presence and testifies to the craftsmanship of late medieval Italian workshops.
