Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester (24 June 1532 – 4 September 1588), usually called Leicester for short, as a confidant of Elizabeth I of England, came to the aid of the insurgents of the Republic of the Seven United Provinces as English governor from 1585 to 1587. His intervention, however, ended in failure.
