Gilded Silver Chalice With A Copper Base From The Gothic/renaissance Period - Italy - 15th/16th Century
An elegant Italian liturgical chalice dating from the transitional period between the late Gothic and early Renaissance. This remarkable work illustrates the evolution of forms and decoration in Italian religious metalwork at the dawn of the 16th century, when the last vestiges of the Gothic style blended harmoniously with the new aesthetic principles of the Renaissance.
The chalice consists of a gilded silver bowl resting on a richly engraved gilded copper mount and base. The central, ovoid, faceted knot is decorated with finely chiseled geometric and plant motifs, while the broad, multi-lobed foot features an engraved design of stylized scrolls and foliage still influenced by the late Gothic style.
The piece stands out for the quality of its craftsmanship and the balance of its proportions. The engraved motifs on the base already reveal a Renaissance influence through their pursuit of symmetry and their more naturalistic treatment of the ornamentation, while the overall structure retains the verticality and elegance characteristic of the Late Gothic style.
The base is adorned with several circular medallions, likely added at a later date. Their style and method of attachment do indeed appear to differ from the rest of the piece. Far from detracting from the piece’s appeal, these additions bear witness to its history and its continued use over the centuries.
Much of the original gilding remains, accompanied by an authentic patina of use that underscores the object’s age and its liturgical character.
