Corpus Christi' Figure Of Christ In Fire-gilt Bronze - Italy - Late 16th Century
Superb figure of Christ on the cross (Corpus Christi) in finely chased, fire-gilded bronze, dating from the late 16th century. The sculpture is distinguished by its expressive, naturalistic execution, characteristic of late Renaissance production.
The slender body of Christ presents a carefully modeled anatomy, with particular attention paid to facial detail, wavy hair and delicately draped perizonium. The wide-spread arms and bowed head convey a dramatic and spiritual intensity typical of the period.
The original gilding, now partially worn, reveals in places the brown patina of the bronze, giving the whole a beautiful depth and added authenticity. The sculpture is mounted on a modern, sober and elegant presentation pedestal for optimal presentation.
