Bronze Mortar - France - Early 17th Century
Beautiful bronze mortarboard dating from the 17th century, of flared form resting on a stable circular base. It has a beautiful old patina, with dark brown shades and traces of oxidation, testifying to its authenticity.
The body is decorated with cabochons in relief arranged in a rosette, as well as small pillars (or colonnette-like motifs) evenly distributed around the rim. This sober yet structured ornamentation is characteristic of certain European productions of the period.
The interior, smooth and patinated by use, shows traces of wear consistent with early use for grinding substances (spices, medicinal preparations or pigments). The underside shows manufacturing marks typical of an ancient object cast in bronze.
