Tobacco Box In Sculpted Corozo Nut, Napoleontic Period - France - 18th Century
Elegant snuffbox finely carved from corozo nut (often referred to as “vegetable ivory”), dating to the Napoleonic period, around 1800. The object has a slightly conical, ovoid form with a domed, removable lid that fits neatly onto the body.
The exterior is richly decorated with deeply carved relief motifs. Within cartouches appear military and musical attributes, including crossed drums, standards, and a lyre, suggesting a connection to the ceremonial and symbolic world of the First French Empire. These elements are framed by finely incised geometric patterns that enhance depth and texture.
The lid is adorned with radiating stylized leaf motifs, culminating in a small knop. A band of repeating triangular and foliate decoration encircles the junction between lid and body. The base retains remnants of an old collection or inventory label.
The interior is hollowed and smooth, showing signs of use consistent with its age. The warm honey-brown patina, along with minor wear and small natural cracks, reflects both the organic nature of the material and its hand-crafted origin.
