Treen: Louis XIII Boxwood Turned Mortar , With Pestle Circa 1660 flag

Object description :

"Treen: Louis XIII Boxwood Turned Mortar , With Pestle Circa 1660"
Beautiful little mortar from solid boxwood, good thickness, circular in shape, deeply turned with rings, resting on a well-affirmed pedestal, under this foot: a beautiful turning as umbilicus.
Frustoconical body is circled with one serie of 3 rings, strong edge is molded, its wide upper border decorated with fine concentric circles. The pear-shaped pestle, also boxwood, is adorned on top by a turned umbilicus.
Beautiful object, very early, we see more often this kind of turning in France on bronze (on buckets to be blessed, on mortars which are dated from the 16th century), but I lack documentation regarding boxwood. ....
our British colleagues have approaching mortars, most often from Lignum Vitae.. they announce them dating from the Charles II period..
condition: splits, wood has dried, but its thickness means that the interior has no splits. (A minimal hair on bottom though)
Dimensions: 10cm x 10cm. Take a good look at our photos.....
