A Portrait Given To Gustave Flaubert By An Anonymous Friend.
Artist: Anonyme
Sorry, no airmail export for this.
What a wonderful discovery—this portrait of a mustachioed man wearing an oriental cap, writing at his desk in front of a large bookcase, his gaze fixed directly on you. On back of the canvas, artist, in somewhat naive handwriting, has written this dedication: “To my friend Gustave Flaubert,” and may have added an inscription further down?
The painting, canvas, and pigments are unquestionably 19th-century, as is the stucco frame bearing Parisian labels.
Not being an expert, Icannot certify that this is a portrait of Gustave Flaubert.
However, the resemblance to the writer is striking.
Dimensions: Stucco frame (showing some touch-ups and minor surface imperfections): 47 × 33 cm. Canvas: 40 × 27 cm.
Since oil portraits of Gustave Flaubert are particularly rare— the writer refused to pose — it is tempting to think that this work may have been created in a studio, perhaps from a photograph, circa 1875.
A very interesting piece, which undoubtedly warrants further research.
