15th–16th-century Hispano-moorish Winged Mortar, Engraved Bronze, Southern Spain

A fine bronze mortar standing on a circular plinth base. The truncated conical body is flanked by eight wing-shaped buttresses, alternating between two distinct profiles, triangular and ear-shaped.

The entire outer surface is ornamented with garlands of small wave-like incisions, forming a regular decorative pattern that enhances the rich, dark and substantial patina.

The exterior is in very fine condition. The mortar, however, saw extensive use, as evidenced by significant wear to the interior, eventually resulting in a perforation through the rounded base. This was repaired at an earlier date by filling the opening with lead, a type of intervention often encountered on mortars that remained in prolonged use.

A particularly attractive example, with the upper rim gently rounded and polished through use, lending the piece a distinctive elegance.
