émile Gallé (1846–1904) Enameled Crystal Vase, Circa 1885–1895 - France
A rare cylindrical vase made of slightly amber-colored blown crystal, resting on an elegant scalloped base. The design, finely executed in polychrome enamel accented with gold, depicts a majestic thistle in bloom—an emblematic symbol of Lorraine—accompanied on the reverse by the Cross of Lorraine. The rim, deliberately irregular, accentuates the organic character of the composition.
This work belongs to Émile Gallé’s early period of glassmaking, during which the artist favored enamel-painted designs before developing his famous acid-etched multilayered glassworks. The richness of the enamel, the quality of the crystal, and the typically Lorraine iconography attest to the refinement of this creation.
Signed “E. Gallé” in black enamel on the base.
