Wrought-iron Surgical Amputation Saw - 18th Century
Surgical amputation saw dating from the 18th century, characterized by its metal mount forming a rigid frame, designed to hold a fine, serrated blade. The instrument is fitted with an ergonomic handle made of weathered wood, testifying to its long and ancient use.
The finely toothed blade features engraved decoration along its entire length, consisting of delicate ornamental motifs, revealing an aesthetic concern rare for a medical instrument of this period. Traces of oxidation and wear are visible, attesting to its authenticity and age.
A screw tensioning system, located at the end of the frame, allowed the blade's rigidity to be adjusted for a more precise cut. This type of saw was used by surgeons before the advent of modern asepsis and anesthesia techniques, particularly during amputations.
