A Rare Pair Of Painted Limoges Enamel Plaques—jacques II Laudin (c. 1663–1729)

Description of the Work: A fine and rare pair (pendant) of rectangular plaques in painted enamel on a domed copper plate, designed for private devotion and made in Limoges between the late 17th and early 18th centuries.

The two pieces are marked with the monogram “IL” in the lower right corner, a signature characteristic of Jacques II Laudin, one of the most illustrious members of the famous Limoges family of enamelers.

Unlike the more common bust or half-length depictions, this pair stands out for its exceptional and rare full-length portrayal of the subjects set against a floral landscape:

Notes on Style and Technique: The works display extraordinary mastery in the application of translucent enamels on a dark background (fondo noir), a technique that lends the garments a vibrant, almost metallic luminosity. The details of the drapery, hairstyles, lilies, and upper inscriptions are enriched by exquisitely refined brushwork in pure gold (rehauts d’or), which is exceptionally well-preserved. The reverse side features the characteristic dark protective counter-enamel.
