Historical and Artistic Details and Condition
This artifact is an excellent example of 18th-century Sicilian ceramic modeling (ceroplastics). The scene, imbued with Baroque pathos, depicts the body of Christ lying in the center, surrounded by the Virgin Mary, the Pious Women (Mary Magdalene and Mary of Cleophas), Joseph of Arimathea, and Nicodemus.
The figures display extraordinary attention to anatomical and expressive detail. The garments are made from original period fabrics embellished with gold-plated metal trims and threads.
The arrangement inside the display case creates a diorama of great visual impact:
- Landscape backdrop: A rocky setting enriched with stones, crystals, moss, and seashells.
- Architectural backdrop: A painted perspective view of the city of Jerusalem.
- Frame: Original frame with carvings and gilded moldings.
