Historical and Artistic Description

A refined and rare tabletop art cabinet, monumental in design despite its compact size, attributable to the renowned work of the medalist and sculptor Rudolf Mayer (1846–1916). The piece bears a circular stamped mark on the back attesting to its authorship and the registration of the model.

Originally conceived as a luxurious cabinet for storing tobacco and pipes in an upper-middle-class residence or a collector’s study, this piece is a superb example of the Neo-Renaissance style that characterized Central European decorative arts in the late 19th century.

Architecture and Decorative Elements

  • The Front: The central door is adorned with a rich bas-relief depicting an elaborate composition of grotesques, leafy clusters, cherubs, and a central mythological female figure (a mermaid or goddess).
  • The Telamons: Flanking the central panel are two imposing male figures in high relief (telamons / bearded warriors) that serve as supporting pilasters, lending a strong vertical thrust and remarkable three-dimensionality to the ensemble.
  • The Cornice: The upper crowning element, clearly of architectural derivation, is embellished with pinnacles, volutes, and a central circular medallion bearing a refined female profile in the classical style—a distinctive element of the stylistic signature of Mayer, the renowned master of European medal art.

The Interiors and Structure

The exterior, crafted from artistic cast iron (Kunstguss), is cast with exceptional precision and hand-chiseled, retaining a warm, period patina enhanced by delicate bronze highlights.

The interior, fully accessible via the original period key and lock, reveals an elegant case constructed entirely of period oak, featuring small shelves and custom-shaped compartments designed to hold pipes and smoking accessories.

Notes on Collectibility and Condition

An object of great decorative character and significant collectible interest, both due to the presence of the artist’s signature/mark and the rarity of this type of piece. It is in extraordinary condition, free of breakage or invasive restoration, and ready for display in a gallery or private collection.
