Gothic Polychrome Wooden Crucified Christ – Lombardy, 14th Century
An important wooden sculpture depicting the crucified Christ, attributable to 14th-century Lombard art.
The work, carved from wood and originally polychromed, retains a significant portion of its original coloration and an extraordinary patina resulting from the passage of time. The face, with half-closed eyes and an intense, contemplative expression, is characterized by a marked naturalism typical of Italian Gothic sculpture.
The elegantly draped loincloth and the simple yet carefully modeled anatomy attest to the high quality of the work. The sculpture exhibits the natural absence of the upper limbs, due to its original placement on a monumental crucifix, as well as the usual signs of aging consistent with the work’s age.
An important example of medieval Italian devotional sculpture, intended for collectors, institutions, and enthusiasts of Gothic art.
