Large Polychrome Majolica Apothecary Jar With Renaissance-style Motifs, Italy, 16th Century

Large 16th-century Italian polychrome majolica apothecary jar, decorated within two large medallions with the profiles of a female figure and a bearded male figure, rendered in the style of the High Renaissance.

The entire surface is embellished with a rich ornamental scheme consisting of plant motifs and polychrome volutes in the traditional shades of cobalt blue, antimony yellow, copper green, and rusty orange, typical of 16th-century Italian production.

The globular shape with a wide mouth is reminiscent of the large vases used in ancient apothecaries, where medicinal preparations, medicinal herbs, and precious substances were stored. The quality of the decoration and the vibrancy of the color palette make it an important collector’s item and a significant example of Italian Renaissance majolica.

It is in good condition, with normal signs of aging, minor glaze chips, and wear consistent with over four centuries of history.
